The elf on the shelf is one of those Christmas traditions that you either wholeheartedly embrace or loath. But whatever side of the fence you stand on there is one thing that can fill any parent with dread, the moment you realize the elf hasn’t moved from the previous day’s spot and your kids have noticed.
So what do you do? Come up with some clever reason why they haven’t, and I am here to share with you some of the possible reasons why your elf on the shelf didn’t move.
Why The Elf on The Shelf Didn’t Move
Someone got out of bed in the night
A great one to use if you are unsure of what to say. You don’t need to place any blame on anyone unless you had a particularly troublesome night with your kids, but you could explain that even the slightest sound that the elf will be discovered moving means they don’t move at all.
Blame the weather
Another great option to consider is blaming the weather. This will work really well if you have had sudden snowfall overnight, but even if there is no evidence of bad weather you could still say you heard a storm in the night and that was the reason.
Your elf is sick
One reason why you may have not had a chance to move or set up the elf is down to illness in the home. The kids could be sick with a cold or you may have been poorly yourself, so your elf may not have moved because they are also sick.
Don’t be put off if no one is unwell, the elf can still be “sick” because of the winter weather outside. You could get the kids to make “get well soon” cards or leave treats for the elf to help them feel better.
The place they are is an excellent viewpoint
If the elf was left at a particular spot that gives them a good viewpoint such as on top of the tree or on a shelf, remarkably, then you could say that they have an excellent viewpoint to observe the day’s behavior so didn’t feel the need to move. This could be a great incentive to encourage good behavior.
The elf is too tired
You could explain that the elf is tired and perhaps needed to take a rest and avid making that big trip back to the North Pole or embark on any naughty antics. This is a great one for younger children to digest.
Maybe the elf is going to move during the day instead
If your kids go off to school, you could use the excuse that the elf might move while they are out. Again younger children may comprehend this one more than older kids. This gives you a chance to set something up while they are out. You could say that even you have been out all day so have a look of surprise when you walk through the door.
