It’s been my go-to drink to make at home lately. It’s fun to do Starbucks holiday drink hacks but sometimes the budget says maybe you should make a drink at home and this one is so easy and delicious that you won’t mind.
I made a frozen hot chocolate frappe in the past and it’s very good but it requires a bit more work than I usually want to do for a mid-day coffee. That’s why I LOVE this hot chocolate cold brew.
How to Make a Hot Chocolate Cold Brew
You will only need a few things to make this cold brew recipe and there are a few ways you can make it. You can even make it with instant coffee, keep reading for my suggestions for substitutions.
- Hot Chocolate Mix
- Cold Brew
- Milk
- Milk Frother (or hot chocolate maker)
Making this drink is really easy. I’ve made it several times since making up this recipe when I was craving a holiday-themed coffee.
- Froth 3/4 cup of milk with one serving of hot chocolate mix.
- Pour over ice and top with cold brew.
That’s all! If you want something less sweet you can half the hot chocolate mix. You can even use sugar-free hot chocolate to make this drink. It’s really easy to adjust to your tastes.
Optional Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate Cold Brew
I’m lactose intolerant so I usually make my hot chocolate cold brew dairy-free. It’s really easy to make this switch. Here are the switches you will want to make.
- Milk: Simply use any dairy-free milk you want. I usually use Oatly Barista Edition. It’s really good for a drink like this because it froths well.
- Hot Chocolate Mix: There are a lot of great hot chocolate mixes out there that don’t use dairy. Swiss Miss even has a non-dairy version now.
That’s all you need to do to have this delicious drink without the dairy.
How to Make Cold Brew At Home
Making your own cold brew is really easy. We always have a pitcher full in my house. We use a simple cold brew maker that just involves putting ground coffee into a basket in cold water. You let it sit in your fridge for several hours and then it’s ready to enjoy.
You can also make this drink without any cold brew. Instant coffee actually works really well. I like to keep Mount Hagen instant coffee on hand for when I forget to make cold brew. It can be mixed in cold water and actually tastes really good.
You can of course also buy pre-made cold brew. Whatever works for you, no matter which you choose it will make a delicious drink to enjoy during the hotter weather.
