Try this homemade hot chocolate recipe this holiday season. It’s easy to make, delicious, and a wonderful gift. Once you try this you will never buy hot chocolate mix again.

I love to make myself a cup of hot chocolate and watch Christmas movies. It’s one of my favorite things to do during the holiday season and I have been known to start doing so in October.

Since it’s something I enjoy so much I go through a lot of hot chocolate. I enjoy making it the fancy way with melted chocolate but often I just reach for some hot chocolate mix.

I almost bought some hot chocolate mix the other day but decided to try to make my own. I’m not sure why I had never made my own homemade hot chocolate mix before.

It’s extremely easy and this recipe makes around 20 cups of homemade hot chocolate. It’s not quite as rich as the one I make with melted chocolate but it’s much quicker and still very good.

You can make it with milk or just water. I usually just use water and a splash of milk. It’s creamiest with milk but water is still delicious.

You want to store the mix in an air-tight container to make sure it stays fresh. It’s best if you use it within 3 months. I don’t think that will be a problem though.

I like to top mine with mini marshmallows (homemade marshmallows are best!) or whipped cream. Even better add a candy cane, my favorite is the Wholesome Organic Candy Canes. They are the only kind I buy anymore because they are so good.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 cups nonfat dry milk powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Mix ingredients well. This works best if you sift it or run it through a food processor to get rid of all lumps and make it really fine.
  2. To make a cup of hot chocolate, add 1/3 cup of hot chocolate mix to mug with 1 cup of hot milk or water. Stir until dissolved.

Don’t forget to share this delicious homemade hot chocolate mix. It makes a great gift. You can make a double batch and divide it into mason jars with the instructions. Throw in some cute mugs and candy canes and it’s an amazing gift.
